Apart from these, the destination also has a number of points of interest that are worth a visit. The Goa State Museum, Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church, Fort Aguada and Se Cathedral are few of them. The Western Ghats, which cover a significant chunk of the state, adorn it with lush rolling hills and diverse wildlife. To introduce yourself to this astonishing variety of flora and fauna, you can visit places like Dr Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary. Established in 1988 and situated on the western end of Chorao Island, it is the only bird sanctuary here. Varieties of resident and migratory birds can be seen here, including pintails, coots, blue-winged teals and purple herons.
Besides this, you can also explore Mhadei and Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuaries. Bondla Wildlife Sanctuary is another great place, where you can go for a wildlife safari. About 47 KM from Panaji, it is more like a jungle resort with proper accommodation facilities for tourists.
Apart from wildlife spotting, a plethora of adventure sports offered in the state are also a hit among thrill seekers. Other than trekking and common water sports like jet skiing, snorkelling and parasailing, kayaking in Goa is also gaining huge fame among visitors.
Kayaking is similar to canoeing, wherein you sit in a boat and traverse a waterbody using a paddle. The only difference is that canoes are open and have single-bladed paddles, while kayaks are closed and conventionally propelled by double-bladed paddles. It originated in Greenland, where Eskimos used it to hunt fish. Those pioneers have left kayaks for motorboats, but the activity has become a hit among adventure lovers all over the world. In India too, the sport has earned huge popularity, and now it is offered in its various parts. In the northern part of the country, the Himalayan Rivers are perfect for it. If you go to the northeast, you can try it in the state of Sikkim. Places like Majitar, Melli and Sikip are famous as a hub, while Karwar in Karnataka is also apt for it.
There is special equipment needed for the activity, and the foremost requirement is a kayak and a paddle. Kayaks are of different types like sit-on-top, touring, white water and inflatable. Besides the boat, you also need safety gear like a helmet and life jacket. A life jacket is extremely important, and no matter what water sport you are trying, you must use one. A dry suit or wet suit helps you protect your skin from the saline seawater.
Owing to the expansive Arabian Sea, there are infinite kayaking opportunities in Goa. In addition, scenic backwaters and rivers like Chopora, Zuari, Nerul and Mandovi are also perfect for the activity. The best thing is that it can be tried here any time of the year, including the monsoon months. Night Kayaking in Goa is also gaining huge fame among locals as well as tourists. The state is undoubtedly charming, but its beauty grows manifold when it is soaked in dim moonlight.

With the basic training, you will be ready to board your kayaks and cruise on the vast ocean.
